재미와 교훈이 있는 113가지 지혜『이솝우화』. ≪성서≫ 다음으로 읽힌 책 ≪이솝우화≫는 약자에게는 희망과 용기를, 교만하고 무례한 자에게는 반성의 기회를 마련해 주는 책으로 고전으로 평가 받는다. 짧은 글 속에 특유의 재치로 당대 사회를 날카롭게 비판하는 동시에 사회 및 인간관계 등에 대한 실질적이고 전반적인 교훈을 제공한다. 진실과 거짓, 노력과 게으름, 욕심과 나눔, 독단과 배려 등의 삶의 문제를 함축하여 생각의 깊이를 더한다.

이 책은《이솝우화》 113편을 한데 엮은 것으로, 한 편의 우화를 읽은 후에 한 문장의 교훈을 얻도록 구성했다. 이솝의 글은 사람마다 각기 다른 풀이를 내놓을 수 있을 만큼 중의적이고 상징성이 풍부하므로, 제시된 교훈에 얽매이지 말고 자신만의 사고로 이야기를 풀어낼 수도 있다. 또한 영문본을 함께 수록하여 이솝 특유의 재치와 신랄한 비판을 그대로 느낄 수 있도록 도왔다.

저자 이솝(Aesop)은 그리스의 우화 작가(B.C. 620~B.C. 560)로, 그리스 사모스 왕의 노예였는데 우화를 재미있게 이야기하여 해방되었다고 한다. 작품에 우화집 《이솝 이야기》가 있다.
